Paris 1924 Jeux Olympiques
The 1924 Olympic Games is among the most notable of the 20th century, producing some of the most famous names in Olympic history books. British runners Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell won the 100 meter and 400 meter events respectively, celebrated in the film Chariots of Fire. Swimmer Johnny Weissmuller- took 3 golds in swimming and 1 in water polo, then went on to playing Tarzan in films of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Winning the decathlon, Harold Osborn set records as the Worlds Greatest Athlete. Tennis legend Helen Wills took home gold for the USA. American John Kelly, father of Princess Grace of Monaco, won gold in sculling.
1924 was also the first Olympiad to include a winter version (hosted in Chamonix, France), the first to incorporate a celebratory closing ceremony, and the first to have a dedicated athlete's village with housing.
It was the last Olympic Games presided over by Pierre De Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games, and the first one to ever use the motto “Citius, Altius, Fortius”.
